La Mortella: the garden of the Waltons

Hewn from the slopes of an ancient lava flow, and embodying all her love for nature, beauty and art. Created in the 1950s, it received a considerable boost from the plan of Russell Page. In 1965 the famous architect created the underlying structure of the garden, for a long time the exclusive grounds of a private residence.

Some years ago the gardens were opened to the public and the cultural activities organised by the ‘volcanic’ Lady Susanna Walton have multiplied ever since.
Every visit absorbs you and leads you to new discoveries, sensations and emotions.
From surprise, at the beauty of the coloured flowers and the majestic trees, you move on to panoramas that open up between the branches: the white walls of Mount Epomeo in the greenery of the mountain which dominates from on high; the profile of distant Forio which enchants you with the church of the Soccorso and the Torrione lit up by the warm toned light of the setting sun.
