A sub-tropical atmosphere
In the hotel gardens several varieties of palm trees flourish, along with exemplars of Euphorbia candelabra of considerable size, the beautiful Cycas revoluta, Strelitzia augusta, Hibiscus with its wonderful blossoms and many colours of Bougainvillea.Unusually, the coral flowers of our Erythrina insignis tree blossom in Spring, before it produces the leaves that shade the garden pool with its papyrus plants, water lilies, goldfish and family of terrapins.
The garden was first laid out by a horticulturalist from Capri, Alberto Cosentino, who came to Ischia in the footsteps of Angelo Rizzoli and went on to found one of the island’s major nurseries. Since then the garden has thrived and new specimens, the fruit of constant research, have been added, mostly from the Vitale nursery. In 1982 Lady Susanna Walton inspired the construction of the fish pool, supplying directions for its construction, guidance with the planting, and gifts of water lilies, papyrus plants and goldfish.
In 1992 the beautiful Phoenix dactifera palm trees arrived from Sicily. Every year new varieties from the subtropics are sought out and planted, but eventually it is the microclimate at Maronti that decides if the introduction of a new plant will be successful.
